How it differs from a conventional impression
In the classic method the impression of the teeth is taken with a tray and impression material (alginate or silicone): you wait for the material to set in the mouth, then a plaster model is poured and delivered to the laboratory. In some patients this process can trigger a gag reflex and discomfort, and if the material distorts a repeat impression is needed. With the digital method there is no need to wait for material to set in the mouth — the scan gives a 3D model on screen immediately, the file is sent electronically, and if needed only one area can be re-scanned. In terms of accuracy, for single teeth and short-span work a digital impression usually gives a result comparable to a conventional one; for full-arch (long-span) cases the choice depends on the scanner, the technique and the clinical situation, and the decision is made by the dentist.

- Comfort: because there is no setting material in the mouth, the gag reflex and discomfort may be reduced.

Nevertheless, every clinical case is different: in some complex cases or full-arch work the dentist may consider a conventional impression or a combination of the two methods appropriate.
